What is GEO, and is it the same as AEO?

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of getting your business cited inside AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews. In practice it's the same work most people call AEO (answer engine optimization): write clear, answer-first content, keep your business facts consistent across the web, and earn the authority that makes AI engines trust you as a source.

GEO and AEO are two names for the same goal — being the source an AI engine lifts into its answer — and they're used interchangeably in practice. "GEO" came out of academic research into how generative models choose what to cite; "AEO" is the term most marketers and agencies use day to day. Neither is a different technique from the other, so there's no reason to get hung up on which label to use. What matters is how both differ from traditional SEO. Classic SEO optimizes a page to rank in a list of links a person scrolls and clicks. GEO/AEO optimizes a page to be selected as the material an AI reads, paraphrases, and attributes — often without the user clicking through at all. That shifts the work toward answering specific questions directly and early, structuring content so it's easy to extract, keeping your facts consistent everywhere they appear, and building the kind of authority that makes a model trust you. If you're already doing solid AEO, you're already doing GEO.

Key takeaways

  • GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization) describe the same work: getting cited inside AI-generated answers.
  • "GEO" originated in academic research on how generative models pick sources; "AEO" is the more common industry term — the techniques are identical.
  • Both differ from SEO: SEO ranks a page in a list of links, while GEO/AEO gets a page selected as the source an AI reads and paraphrases.
  • The core tactics are answer-first content, extractable structure, consistent business facts across the web, and genuine authority signals.
